We’ve all heard the dire warnings about how detrimental smoking is to our health. But for the 45 million smokers in the United States today, smoking provides relaxation, an antidote to boredom, a pleasurable habit that is nearly impossible to give up.
What makes smoking so very addictive? It’s the nicotine, a drug that’s found naturally in tobacco. Scientists believe nicotine is just as addictive as heroin or cocaine. In the same way as these illegal drugs, your body becomes both physically and psychologically addicted to nicotine. Unless a smoker is able to overcome both of these dependencies, the chances for long-term success in quitting smoking are pretty slim.
And why should anyone consider quitting smoking? Do the health risks really outweigh the simple pleasure smoking brings?
Concern over one’s health is one of the main reasons people desire to stop smoking. It’s a documented fact that over half of the smokers today will develop a smoking-related illness that will most likely kill them. Lung cancer tops the list, but smoking can cause other equally serious diseases - from bladder cancer to leukemia. Emphysema is a progressive disease that affects smokers in their later years, and it’s usually fatal (in addition to being painful and very uncomfortable as it progresses).
Smoking affects women in unique ways, causing them to be at higher risk for heart attack, strokes, and blood clots. Smoking also causes premature aging, and is thought now to increase a person’s risk of macular degeneration.
Once you decide that the enjoyment of smoking is not worth the health risks, you will discover there are actually many ways to quit smoking. Some people try to just go "cold turkey," and while this works for some, most smokers can use a little help and support. The nicotine patch, chewing gum, prescription pills, and the still developing stop smoking injection are all available resources for those wishing to stop smoking.
Alternative methods abound as well; acupuncture, hypnosis, and laser therapy are all gaining in popularity as ways to stop smoking. Behavioral methods combined with all of the above ensure a greater than average success rate for those attempting to quit.
If you have decided to improve your life and your health by a decision to stop smoking, take a look at all the resources popular today and choose one that fits your needs. You’ll be on your way to a new you!
