Stop Smoking Plan: The First Seven Days

AUTHOR: Suzanne Harris

Stop Smoking Plan
You’ve made the momentous decision to quit smoking. This is a very positive decision, and one that is bound to be life changing. However, it is also one of the toughest decisions you’ll ever make. In some ways, the first week is the most crucial, so let’s take a look at a plan for those first seven days.

Sunday

Sunday is the start of a brand-new week. It’s still the weekend, but not as difficult as beginning a new program on Friday or Saturday, when social events might be too tempting. Sunday is often a day of reflection, so it’s the perfect time to set your goals and create a daily plan – all with the successful outcome of becoming a nonsmoker. Make sure you have gotten rid of all your smoking paraphernalia, from the actual cigarettes to lighters and ashtrays.

Monday

Your stop smoking plan is into effect now. It’s back to work, and you’ll be very tempted to fall back into familiar habits. You may be experiencing physical cravings and feel irritable and edgy. Having an awareness of what you can expect to feel is half the battle. Instead of smoking on your break, use that time to see what smoking programs might be available in your area.

Tuesday

The newness of your resolve is wearing off – and you may feel anxious and even physically sick. You are going through withdrawal! Make sure you are treating yourself with care: eat nutritious foods, take a brisk walk during your lunch hour, reward yourself with small pleasures. Breathe deeply and focus on the positive changes you are planting in your life.

Wednesday

It’s really true – gradually your cravings will lessen and your mood will improve. There is light at the end of the tunnel. This is not to say that you won’t face many challenging days ahead, but you can take comfort in the fact that your stop smoking plan is actually working. Why don’t you look into joining a fitness club near your house; it might be the perfect time to look into that Pilates class you’ve been wondering about. Getting more physical activity is a great way to help your body detox from all the nicotine buildup.

Thursday

Make sure that each and every day you celebrate your successes. Keep your mind on the positive, knowing that you are creating a healthier, happier future for yourself by embarking on your stop smoking plan. Today you might consider starting a journal of thoughts; be sure to include things you are grateful for as well as what challenges you overcome each day.

Friday

The end of the first work-week! It’s quite an accomplishment. Your friends may be on their way out to a night of fun, but just for now, you’d be wise to spend your evening at home where you won’t be so tempted to smoke. Or you might plan something out of the ordinary – going to a movie, or visiting a cultural event.

Saturday

Recognize that without smoking, you have time to develop some new hobbies. How about knitting or woodworking or gardening? Today is a great time to look into what interests you. This could also be a way for you to meet a whole new group of friends, many of whom will be nonsmokers – just like you!
